As the Financial Big Bang unfolds, and as corporate management becomes increasingly com-plex,advanced, and specialized, the need for professional personnel only grows more acute.However, many companies, particularly in financial services, have great difficulty hiring,training, and compensating professionals because their personnel system retains traditionalpractices such as rotation and seniority.

Based on on-site interviews, this papers presents the strategies of U.S. companies that haveadopted radical practices for human resource management (HRM )of professionals, andsuggests directions for Japanese companies to pursue (particularly financial services compa-nies).
