2001年09月01日

(Kunio Ogihara)

Introduction

The investment climate in fiscal 2000 was a severe one due to sustained ultra-low interest rates and thedepressed stock market. It was a particularly bad year for life insurers, as five life insurance companiessuccumbed to the burden of negative spreads, threatening the credibility of the industry.

In this paper, rather than looking at individual companies, we focus primarily on the financial conditionof the ten major and second-tier companies as a whole.
